& Where to Discover It

There’s something special about spending a full day on the Ottawa River—the energy of the rapids, the rhythm of the water, the feeling of being immersed in a wild landscape. And when night falls, that same landscape offers another experience entirely: a sky full of stars, uninterrupted by city light.

During International Dark Sky Week, starting April 17, 2026, people around the world are encouraged to turn off unnecessary lights and rediscover the night. It’s a simple idea with a powerful result—when artificial light fades, the sky comes alive.

At OWL Rafting’s waterfront resort, darkness still falls naturally. Set along Lac Rocher Fendu, nestled amongst the forested Canadian Shield, we are removed from the rush of the city and its urban glow. With minimal competing artificial light, the view of the stars is truly spectacular.

Step outside your cabin, campsite, or glamping tent and look up. The longer you watch, the more you see. It’s quiet, introspective, and deeply calming. Take the chance to slow down, and allow yourself to be mesmerized by the vast, awe-inspiring night sky.

This kind of darkness is increasingly rare, and worth protecting. Dark skies support healthy ecosystems, allowing nocturnal wildlife to thrive and migratory birds to navigate. They also support our own well-being, helping regulate sleep cycles and offering a sense of calm and perspective.

The good news? Protecting dark skies starts with small, everyday choices.

At OWL, we aim to keep lighting minimal and purposeful. You can bring that same mindset home! Keep light focused and useful. Outdoors, choose fixtures that point downward, lighting pathways instead of the sky. Use only the brightness you need and opt for warm-toned bulbs (3000K or lower) for a softer, more natural glow.

Let darkness return when light is not needed. Motion sensors and timers ensure lights are on only when in use—simple changes that improve efficiency while reducing unnecessary light. Inside, be mindful of light spill. Closing curtains or blinds at night helps keep indoor light from escaping outdoors, and dimming lights in the evening supports your body’s natural rhythm.

When it comes to landscaping, keep it subtle. Avoid uplighting trees or buildings, instead opting for soft, low lighting that stays close to the ground keeps the night sky intact.

An overnight stay at OWL gives you the chance to experience what these choices make possible. After a day on the river, settle into the quiet of the shoreline, let the night deepen, and watch as the sky reveals itself.

Because the Ottawa River doesn’t just offer a day of adventure—it offers a night sky worth staying for.

Your guide to the Ottawa River experience at OWL Rafting

Written by Kirstin Thompson

If you’ve ever browsed whitewater rafting trips, you’ve probably seen rapids described using
numbers—Class I, II, III, IV, or V. While this international river classification system provides a
helpful guideline, the reality is that whitewater can be surprisingly subjective. The experience of
a rapid can change depending on the river, the water level, and even the type of craft you’re
paddling.

At OWL Rafting on the Ottawa River, this is exactly what makes your experience so special.

The Whitewater Classification System

Rivers around the world are typically rated using the International Scale of River Difficulty,
which ranges from Class I to Class V:
Class I – Gentle moving water with small simple waves, few to no obstacles
Class II – Small rapids with straightforward channels and occasional maneuvering required.
Class III – Moderate to larger, irregular waves and complex currents. Rapids become more dynamic and exciting.
Class IV – Powerful rapids with larger waves, hydraulics, and technical maneuvering. This is where the adrenaline really starts to build.
Class V – Long, powerful, and highly technical rapids with significant hazards. These are typically
reserved for expert paddlers with advanced skills.

While the classification scale gives a general idea of difficulty, it doesn’t always tell the full story. Several factors influence how a rapid actually feels on the water:

The Type of River
Some rivers are steep and technical, filled with tight channels and quick maneuvers. Others, like
the Ottawa, are known for big-volume whitewater—wide channels with powerful waves and
hydraulics.

Water Levels
Rivers constantly change. Higher water levels can create bigger waves and stronger currents,
while lower levels may expose rocks or create more technical routes. On the Ottawa River, these seasonal shifts mean the same rapid can offer a slightly different ride throughout the
summer.

The Craft You’re In
A rapid that feels intense in a canoe may feel completely different in a large, guided raft. Rafts
are stable, buoyant, and guided by experienced professionals—making bigger water accessible
to a wide range of guests.

The Ottawa River: The Perfect Class III–IV Whitewater Playground

The Ottawa River is widely considered a Class III–IV river, which makes it one of the best
whitewater destinations in North America for both first-time rafters and seasoned paddlers.
What makes it unique is its big water style. Instead of tight, technical drops, the Ottawa offers
huge rolling waves, playful hydraulics, and wide-open channels. This creates thrilling rapids
without the extremely narrow or hazardous features often found on steeper rivers. The result?
An ideal balance of excitement and accessibility.

A River That Changes Throughout the Season

One of the most beautiful aspects of rafting the Ottawa River is that it never feels exactly the
same twice. Early in the season, higher water levels create big waves and powerful rides. As summer progresses, the river gradually drops, revealing different lines, features, and play spots within the rapids. For returning guests, this means every trip offers a new perspective on familiar rapids. For first-time visitors, it means you’re stepping onto a river that has been thrilling paddlers for decades.

The OWL Rafting Experience

At OWL Rafting, our guides know the Ottawa River like the back of their hand. Whether it’s your
first time in a raft or your tenth visit to the river, they’ll help you experience the rapids in a way
that’s both exciting and comfortable for your group. OWL offers a trip for everyone through one
of our three intensity levels Low, Medium or High. The Ottawa’s whitewater strikes that perfect
balance and remains one of the best rivers in the world for guided whitewater rafting
adventures. Big waves. Epic splashes. Stunning scenery. And a river that always keeps things
interesting.

Planning your first whitewater rafting trip? What should you wear or pack for an unforgettable and exciting experience?

This blog will help you prepare for your whitewater rafting adventure with practical packing tips tailored specifically for a day on the Ottawa River. From what to wear to what to leave behind, we’ll guide you through the essentials and the don’t-needs. Whether you’re a beginner or need a refresher, this post will help you feel ready, confident, and excited for your day on the river.

What to Wear for Whitewater Rafting

Choosing the proper clothing can make all the difference in your comfort and safety during a day trip. The number one rule? Avoid cotton. Since cotton provides little insulation when wet, it is recommended to wear synthetic or quick-dry fabrics that wick moisture and dry quickly instead.

OWL Rafting offers wetsuits for rent, which is an excellent option if you’re unsure about your layers or expect cooler weather.

For footwear, secure shoes are a must. Water shoes, strap-on sandals (no flip-flops), or old sneakers all work well. Avoid any footwear that might slip off in the water or get heavy when wet.

If you forgot to pack an extra layer or rafting-friendly footwear, there are great options in the retail store for you to purchase.

If you have sun-sensitive skin, consider wearing a long-sleeve UV-protective shirt and a hat with a chin strap for comfort. And don’t forget—OWL provides all required safety gear, including helmets, lifejackets, and paddles, so you won’t need to bring your own.

On the Blog: 15 Things Everyone Should Know About Whitewater Rafting

What to Bring (and Not Bring) on the Raft

Packing light is key. The essentials for your raft should be minimal, well-secured, and water-friendly. Personal items, such as GoPros, can be brought at your own risk, but must be secured appropriately. Necessary items, such as medication, are allowed; however, please do not store them in a bag.

Reusable clip-on water bottles are welcome and encouraged to stay hydrated. Leave valuables like jewellery, wallets, or keys at your accommodation or in a secure area—losing them in the river is easier than you think.

To ensure rafters maintain their energy levels, the guides like to take a break at the halfway point for juice, water, and a snack, so rest assured you’re in good hands.

Preparing for the Weather

Ottawa River rafting operates rain or shine, and rainy days can be some of the most fun. The thrill of the rapids doesn’t fade with a few drops of rain; if anything, it adds to the adventure. That said, dressing appropriately is essential.

A quick-dry outer layer and sunglasses with a strap are good to protect your eyes and skin from the sun. On sunny days, sunscreen is a must—just make sure it’s both waterproof and reef-safe, so it won’t harm the local river ecosystem.

OWL Rafting offers breaks and snacks during your trip, so if the weather shifts, there’s time to pause and regroup. Their guides are trained to read the river and adjust the day’s route for safety and enjoyment.

But we recognize our Indigenous brothers and sisters every day. OWL Rafting, our proud third-generation family-owned business, has been hosting adventurers of all ages on the stunning Ottawa River. We recognize the deep and inherent connection between the Kitchisippi – the Ottawa River – and the Algonquin peoples who have called this place home since time immemorial. We’re grateful for their enduring legacy and how it enriches our daily lives. So, come along with us as we journey through the Indigenous history of the Ottawa River. Together, we’ll gain a deeper appreciation for this beautiful region and the stories it holds. Let’s discuss:

1)Ottawa River History

2)The Algonquin Nation

3)Canoe Culture

4)Sacred Sites & Spiritual Connection

5)Honouring Indigenous History Month

The Ottawa River: A Historical Lifeline

The history of the Ottawa River is deeply intertwined with that of the Algonquin people. Known as “Kitchissippi” meaning the “big river” or “grand river” in Anishinaabemowin, the Algonquin language, this mighty river is the “main artery” of Algonquin territory, with their homelands encompassing all of the Ottawa River watershed. Flowing through unceded Algonquin territory, the Kitchisippi has always been a vital transportation route for trade and travel, a gathering place for ceremony and celebration, and a rich source of sustenance for thousands of years. The Algonquin people are the original stewards of this land.

The Kitchisippi has long been a gathering place for Algonquin peoples and numerous other indigenous nations who have paddled these waters.

The Algonquin Nation

The Algonquin people have a rich history and deep connection to the Ottawa River watershed, dating back at least 12,000 years, with oral traditions stating their presence since time immemorial. Their ancestors were semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers who used birch bark canoes for transportation and relied on the rivers for hunting, fishing, and gathering.

European contact began in 1613 with Samuel de Champlain, leading to significant changes and challenges for the Algonquin people. The fur trade, initiated in the 1530s, and the subsequent Beaver Wars (1640-1701) brought conflict and displacement. Despite hardships, the Algonquins maintain their cultural heritage and connection to the land.

Sources:

https://waaseyaaconsulting.ca/blog/brief-history-of-the-madaoueskarini-algonquin-people

https://ottawariver.org/pdf/05-ch2-3.pdf

Canoe Culture

Since time immemorial, birch bark canoes have played a fundamental role in the lives of Algonquin people. The canoe enables them to travel extensive distances and connect their communities. However, the continued impacts of colonization have led to an interruption in their relationships with this ancestral craft. They are (re)connecting and (re)learning knowledge and practices, including how to build a birch bark canoe. A canoe is built in ceremony and with intention.

At OWL Rafting, we pay homage to this rich canoe culture by sharing the Algonquin people’s travel routes with our guests – but in a different craft; a raft designed for big whitewater.

Source: https://waaseyaaconsulting.ca/blog/omamiwinini-wiigwas-chiiman-algonquin-birch-bark-canoe

Sacred Sites & Spiritual Connection

The Ottawa River is home to many sacred sites, deeply revered by Algonquin communities for their cultural and spiritual significance as meeting places, portage sites, and trade routes.

Chaudière Falls: The Chaudière Falls, best known as Akikpautik, and Islands have been a sacred meeting place for over 5,000 years, predating the Great Pyramid and Stonehenge. Samuel de Champlain witnessed Algonquin ceremonies here in 1613. The area, in Algonquin territory, was a neutral meeting place where people from vast distances would gather peacefully, leaving their weapons behind. This tradition ended with European settlement and industrialization.

In 1908, the Ring Dam submerged the Chaudière Falls, once a major tourist attraction. Ottawa’s bid to become Canada’s capital included paintings of the Falls, influencing Queen Victoria’s decision. Prime Minister Mackenzie King’s 1950 Master Plan for Ottawa envisioned restoring the Falls as a central park. The National Capital Commission, established in 1958, implemented these plans, purchasing industrial land to free the shoreline.

Algonquin leader William Commanda advocated for undamming the Falls, creating parkland, and establishing an Indigenous peace and healing center, a vision supported by many and recognized by the Order of Canada. Work is still being done to restore this sacred place.

Sources:

https://anishinabeknews.ca/2016/10/01/chaudiere-falls-is-an-indigenous-cathedral/

Oiseau Rock: This site is located along the Ottawa River near Sheenboro, Quebec. This towering rock face rises over 150 meters above the river and features ancient pictographs created by Indigenous peoples. These pictographs, painted in red ochre, depict various symbols and figures, believed to have been created for spiritual and ceremonial purposes. Oiseau Rock is a testament to the deep spiritual connection Indigenous peoples have with the land and the river. It served as a place of vision quests, where individuals sought guidance and spiritual insight.

Sources: https://albinger.me/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/friends-of-oiseau-rock-sacred-aboriginal-site-ottawa-river.pdf

Important Note: INTERACT RESPECTFULLY WITH INDIGENOUS LANDS. Visitor activity can create additional challenges or increase vulnerability for the Indigenous community you are visiting. Wildfires, stranded or injured backcountry visitors, and increased pollution of waters and lands place extra strain on Indigenous communities and resources. If you can’t keep away, please enrich your experience by developing your respect for the water, plants, and animals that have sustained the people for millennia. Take direction for your adventure and wildlife experience from local Indigenous guides.

Source: https://www.indigenousbc.com/how-to-travel-responsibly

Honouring Indigenous History Month

This Indigenous History Month, we invite you to join us in honouring the profound history and culture of the Algonquin peoples along the Ottawa River. Whether navigating the rapids or enjoying the serene beauty of the river, take a moment to reflect on the deep connections between the land, water, and the Algonquin communities who have cherished this region for generations.

Are you interested in learning more about the Indigenous history of your current homelands? Here’s a good resource >

Note: Dear reader, We welcome your feedback.
At the OWL Rafting wilderness resort, ‘sustainability’ and ‘sustainable travel’ aren’t just buzzwords – it’s our way of life. From our daily operations to our amenities to our self-propelled whitewater rafting tours, we’re committed to keeping our wilderness resort and the stunning Ottawa River clean, green, and thriving.

As we gear up for our opening day over the upcoming May Long Weekend, we invite you to join us in our eco-conscious efforts. Discover simple yet impactful ways to make your journey to OWL Rafting sustainable and hassle-free. Let’s keep Canada’s landscapes rich, flowing, and thriving for future generations!

Tip 1: Pack Light

Travelling light isn’t just a convenience; it’s an eco-friendly practice perfectly compatible with great outdoor adventures. Resist the urge to overpack, and take a minimalist approach this way – you’ll be aiding the environment and lessening your load. Here are some packing tips for the Ottawa River:

1. Use a carry-on sized bag instead of a large suitcase

2. Stick to versatile, multi-purpose clothing items you can mix and match

3. For warm weather, opt for quick-dry, lightweight fabrics ideal for outdoor activities

4. For chilly days, layer up with sneakers or sandals, wool socks, a cozy wool or fleece sweater, and a nylon windbreaker.

5. Pack the essentials like sunscreen, hat, water bottle, bathing suit, sandals with secure backstraps (or sneakers), etc.

6. Rent gear like wetsuits on-site

Check out our ‘Plan Your Visit’ checklist for your next whitewater rafting vacation!

Tip 2: Sustainable Travel Accommodations

Whether you opt for our cozy glamping tents, rustic cabanas, or good ol’ camping under the stars, each option comes with unique perks and prime locations across our resort. But here’s the real perk: by choosing our riverside onsite accommodations instead of a traditional hotel, you’re not just fully immersing yourself in the outdoor experience (starry night skies, crackling campfires, camaraderie, wildlife sightings) but also reducing your carbon footprint. Our wilderness resort incorporates sustainable processes through food waste reduction, single-use plastic elimination, water use reduction (ex. composting toilets), annual river clean-ups, staff and guest education and more! For more information about our eco-friendly initiatives, read our ‘About Us’ page.

Tip 3: Ditch Disposables

Hydration is essential during whitewater rafting and resort activities. Therefore, reusable water bottles with potable water stations are a must at OWL Rafting. Eliminating the need for disposable plastic bottles is a simple yet impactful way to reduce our environmental footprint. At our resort, the taps provide drinkable water, making it easy to refill your reusable bottle and stay refreshed throughout your stay. Additionally, we’ve gone one step further to ensure we don’t sell any drinks with plastic packaging in our stores. By choosing a reusable or biodegradable drink option, you’ll make a positive choice for the environment while ensuring you have fuel readily available during your outdoor adventures.

Note: If you’re taking your beverage on the go, we encourage you to bring a reusable travel mug. But if you forget, don’t worry! We offer a fantastic selection of locally designed Ottawa River cups, pottery mugs, and thermal tumblers for purchase. Not only will you support local artisans, but you’ll also be doing your part to reduce single-use waste.

Tip 4: Carpool with Your Crew

Transportation might be the greatest contributor to your ecological footprint. That’s why, on your way to your adventure with us this season, we encourage you to buddy up and carpool/rideshare with your loved ones. Rental cars have become a popular travel method for those trying to escape the city (especially Toronto or Ottawa)! Additionally, bus options are newly available through Ontario Northlands. We recommend checking out their bus schedules for your next trip to the Ottawa River!

Tip 5: Reduce Food Waste

Whether you’ve just cruised on our pontoon boat and enjoyed a sunset BBQ meal, or started your day at our resort with a hearty breakfast, we encourage you to be mindful of your leftovers. Instead of tossing away those scraps, you’ll have the opportunity to scrape the leftovers into a food waste bin – which will then be fed to our onsite pigs (they love melon rinds) or piled into our compost bins to fuel future garden growth. We love a good full-circle moment! That is, of course, if you have any food waste! All our meals are buffet-style, meaning you can take the perfect amount for yourself. If you find all that rafting made you extra hungry, you can always head back up for more!

Tip 6: Observe Without Disturbing

We prioritize the preservation of our local wildlife and their natural habitats. During your stay, you’ll encounter wildlife creatures thriving in their natural environments – on land and under the water. We encourage all our guests to observe and appreciate these critters from a respectful distance, allowing them to roam freely and sustain their generations without disturbance. This is their home too. By embracing a sustainable travel mindset and respecting the boundaries, we can ensure that the delicate ecosystems surrounding our resort remain intact for generations to come.

Final Note

In conclusion, sustainable travel is not just about lessening your footprint while on the road; it’s a holistic approach that begins at home and extends throughout your journey. We encourage all of our guests to embrace a mindset of environmental stewardship that goes beyond the walls of our riverside resort and permeates every aspect of your sustainable travel experience. Protecting the great outdoors is a team effort! We appreciate everyone who actively applies our sentiments and we’re SO excited to see you all on the river (SOON)!
