Burnstown Beach: Enjoy a sun-soaked day on the beautiful sandy beach, swim in the clear, clean water of the Madawaska River, and let the kids burn off some energy on the play structure. The Paddle Shack rents kayaks and paddle boards for those wanting to explore the river. A seasonal concession stand offers refreshments and beach essentials for sale. Public washrooms are available.

Blackbird Café: This hip cafe offers a cool atmosphere where you can try unique and healthy dishes for brunch, lunch, dinner, and dessert. Recent specials included lemon pepper pan fried pickerel, lime and honey glazed salmon, and spicy chorizo tortellini with tomato pesto alfredo. Step inside and experience the buzz of this popular local hangout. Be sure to make a reservation, as there are rarely empty tables!

Neat Coffee Shop: If ever there was a hidden gem, the Neat Café is it. This funky café offers a charming haven where you can relax and enjoy delicious food and drinks. From artisanal coffee to homemade pastries to woodfired pizzas, the Neat Café will satisfy your taste buds. The inside of the café (with its built-in stage) has had its fair share of iconic live entertainment over the years including The Trews, The Sheep Dogs and Buffy Saint Marie. We personally recommend the Butter Chicken Poutine (and everything else).

Oh-el-la Cafe: Indulge in Calabogie’s finest coffee at Oh-el-la’s. This charming coffee shop offers specialty brews, from velvety lattes to refreshing iced coffees. Pair your drink with freshly baked pastries or light bites. With its cozy atmosphere and friendly baristas, Oh-el-la’s is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a cup of joe in the heart of Calabogie.

Algonquin Trail: This is a 296 km multi-use trail that stretches across 10 municipalities (including through the town of Renfrew). Strap on your helmet, rev up your ATV, and embark on an off-road journey past farmland, rushing rivers, forests, and rugged terrain. Keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer, black bears, and a variety of bird species as you traverse the trail.

Renfrew Resale: Renfrew’s newest retail store offers very trendy consignment clothing in the heart of the downtown strip. This charming store offers a curated collection of gently used (or sometimes never worn) clothing and accessories. With quality brands like Aritzia, Lulu Lemon and Skims, Renfrew Resale offers a sustainable way to be fashionable.

McDougall Mill Museum: Step back in time at the McDougall Mill Museum, where history comes alive. Housed in a restored 19th-century Mill, this captivating museum showcases the heritage and stories of the Renfrew region. The slight bounce as you walk along the bridge makes it a bit more fun!

Karras’ Way: This restaurant has long been a Renfrew staple, serving up quality Greek dishes. Popular menu items include Greek specialties such as souvlaki, gyros, and spinach pie, as well as more traditional options such as pizza, subs, sandwiches, fries, and pasta. You really can’t go wrong with their authentic Greek dishes. To top it off, they have the best patio in Renfrew!

Manitou Bistro: Renfrew’s newest restaurant is providing a stunning menu of indigenous fusion cuisine. Their mission is to “bridge the gap of intergenerational trauma in our country and celebrate our strength as indigenous people to our nation through food.” Their menu includes grazing boards, soups, salads, and mains such as Powwow Tacos, Cousin’s Bannock Pizza, Auntie’s 3 Sister Stew and so much more!

Odi’s King Burger: Odi’s Kingburger has been delighting locals and visitors with its classic burgers since 1971. This beloved 70’s themed drive-through is known for its mouthwatering burgers made with fresh, high-quality ingredients and cooked to perfection. Whether you’re craving a juicy cheeseburger, a hearty bacon burger, or a flavourful veggie burger, Odi’s has you covered!

Ottawa Valley Coffee: This cozy café is thriving with plant life and character. Ottawa Valley Coffee provides high-quality locally sourced coffee, craft beer, baked goods, and handmade local products in a welcoming and relaxed setting. 4. Cobden: Discovering Small Town Charm

Cobden, a charming town in the Ottawa Valley, holds a captivating history. Originally settled by Scottish and Irish immigrants in the 19th century, Cobden flourished with its strategic location along the Muskrat Lake. The town shares a fascinating connection with Samuel de Champlain’s astrolabe, an important artefact in Canada’s history. In 1867, a 14-year-old boy named Edward Lee discovered the astrolabe – believed to have been lost in the early 17th century – while helping his father in Cobden. Today, the astrolabe is housed in the Canadian Museum of History.

Activities

Cobden Beach Park: This pristine beach, located on the shores of Muskrat Lake, invites visitors to unwind and soak up the sun on its sandy shores. It provides a tranquil setting for swimming, picnicking, and enjoying quality time with friends and family.

Farmers Market: Every Saturday from 8am-12pm, you can support local farmers at the Cobden Farmers Market. The Cobden Agricultural Society is celebrating 166 years in 2023! Well, it is a bit older still, as prior to 1857 there were two fairs, one held at Foresters Falls and the other in Eganville. Known as the oldest ongoing Agri-Fair in Canada! The grounds are also home to the Cobden Farmers Market which runs from May to October, Taste of the Valley in October and the Cobden Fair in August. 

Food & Drink

Chip Pit: This small French fry truck located on the corner of Pembroke Street and Hwy 17 has a beautiful view of Muskrat Lake and may be the best poutine you will ever try. Well versed in the concept of layering cheese and gravy the Chip Pit has become the place to meet after paddling the Ottawa River!  

Sour Jo’s: Cobden’s newest bakery takes great pride in offering mouth-watering sourdough breads and other baked goods. The friendly and welcoming environment created by both the staff and owners, paired with the food makes this a must-see location. Their focaccia pizza comes with a strong recommendation.

The Little Coffee Shop and the Scoop: Make sure to stop in for a quick coffee, homemade pastry, or ice cream scoop. They’ve got it all! If you decide on the ice cream, beware that this might be the largest ice cream you’ve ever had in your life. It would be worth every penny if pennies still existed.

 

5. Foresters Falls: Majestic Natural Beauty at Every Turn

Foresters Falls lies along the Rocher Fendu section of the Ottawa River; originally known as the ‘Grande Rivière des Algonquins’ or ‘Grande Rivière du Nord’ amongst the French, ‘Kichi Sibi’ amongst the Algonquin Peoples (translates to the ‘Great River’ or ‘La Grande Rivière’) and still holds its nickname as the ‘Original Trans Canada Highway’ paddled by canoe (our early car). This nickname comes from being recognized as the main trade route where the first Canadians and Europeans engaged in fur, timber, and lumber trade.

 Activities

BORCA Mountain Biking Trails: BORCA maintains a large network of quality mountain biking trails, including the OWL Rafting Trails, which are located less than 1km up the road from The River Barn. These advanced trails work their way to the Ottawa River. If you’re travelling without a bike, you can find  Bike rentals and cycle tours at the Whitewater Inn!

OWL Rafting on the Ottawa River:  Make sure to go whitewater rafting on the world-renowned rapids of the Ottawa River. Your experienced and passionate guide controls the raft using oars at the stern, while you paddle  with your crew. The multiple sets of rapids are interspersed with calm pools. Body surf your lifejacket will float you in gentler currents, jump off a cliff into the water, and have water fights – all possible. Beyond the last rapid, climb aboard the floating restaurant, the signature Pontoon Boat to enjoy a freshly prepared grilled buffet, for the return  cruise back to the OWL Resort. This route was well travelled by  First Nations, Voyageurs, and the Log Drive through this  rugged Canadian Shield. Camping, glamping, and other overnight options are also available!

Ross Museum: Step into the past at the Ross Museum in Foresters Falls, where history comes alive in 5 restored or replicated buildings. Discover the hidden ‘falls’ in behind the museum before you go inside. Meander through the Ross House, a replica of an 1800s home, and immerse yourself in the world of early settlers through period furniture, antique china, and kitchenware. In the Exhibit Hall, uncover the nostalgia of an old general store, schoolroom, chapel, barbershop, and millinery shop. The recently acquired St. Aiden’s church adds to the museum’s charm.

OWL Café: The OWL Café is located at OWL Rafting and is the perfect stop after a long drive. They offer specialty coffees and baked sweet and savoury goods to  enjoy at their waterfront resort. Taking a drink to go? Bring your own thermos or mug, or select one ,to go’ with a map of the Ottawa River’s rapids in the well-stocked Outdoor Shop.

Whitewater Brewery (Riverside Brew Pub): A scenic riverside destination where craft beer enthusiasts can indulge in a delightful selection of handcrafted brews. With its panoramic views of the Ottawa River, the brew pub offers a welcoming atmosphere to relax and enjoy a cold pint. From classic styles to seasonal favourites, the brewery showcases their commitment to quality and innovation.

6. Pembroke: Rich Heritage and Military History

Established in the early 19th century, Pembroke grew from a small lumber town to a bustling city. Its strategic location on the Ottawa River made it an important hub for the lumber trade, attracting settlers and businesses. During World War II, the city became a key military training and recruitment center. The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion was formed and trained in Pembroke, contributing to the Allied efforts in Europe. Pembroke’s close ties to the military have left a lasting impact on the community, fostering a sense of pride and appreciation for the sacrifices made by servicemen and women throughout history.

Champlain Trail Museum and Pioneer Village: Dive into the region’s past at this fascinating museum, which features exhibits on the area’s history – particularly the logging industry. Explore the Pioneer Village to experience life as it was in the 19th century.

Pembroke Heritage Murals: These murals capture Pembroke’s history on the downtown walls of the city. These large-scale paintings illustrate the evolving landscapes and lifestyles of Pembroke from its early days as a bustling logging community to the present day. Since the inception of the project in 1990, Pembroke Heritage Murals has grown, overseeing the creation of over thirty stunning murals by talented local and national artists.

Pembroke War Memorial: Pembroke’s War Memorial is dedicated to all Canadian servicemen and women who have served and died in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and more recent battles in which the Canadian military was engaged.

Established in the 1940s as a planned community, the town became a hub for groundbreaking research at the Chalk River Laboratories, contributing to significant advancements in nuclear science. Today, Deep River embraces its scientific legacy while offering the beauty of its natural surroundings.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Tour: Explore the world-renowned research and development facility where groundbreaking work in nuclear science takes place. Take a guided tour to learn about fascinating advancements and contributions made in the field. Note: All visitors must register a minimum of 5 business days in advance of arrival (unless otherwise instructed by your visit coordinator).

Lamure Beach: This beach offers a beautiful sandy stretch along the Ottawa River. With a gradual river drop-off, lifeguards on duty, and amenities like picnic areas and a play structure, it’s a perfect spot for swimming and relaxation. Enjoy stunning views, nearby trails, and convenient access to downtown to the quaint Deep River. This town has the best beaches in the region, and many are considered the most hidden gems of the Ottawa Valley.  

Mount Martin Trail: This trail in Quebec, across the River from Deep River, offers a scenic 5km trek with amazing views of the Laurentian Hills, Ottawa River, and Valley. Accessible by canoe from Deep River, the trail begins with a steep rocky ascent through a mixed forest of majestic white pines. At the summit, approximately 300m high, hikers can enjoy a panoramic vantage point.

Long Shots Sports Café: A local bar and grill with an outdoor patio, a big entertainment lineup, and the occasional trivia night. Their online reviews boast a friendly atmosphere, friendly staff, and tasty food. The menu consists of crowd pleasers including battered fish, fajitas, and mac and cheese! Be sure to check it out while you’re in town.

Swisha Spuds: The small Quebec town of Swisha is located just outside of Deep River (also along the Ottawa River) and houses an amazing fry truck called ‘Swisha Spuds’. Their poutine and hamburger options are the best. We recommend adding on the extra couple of kilometers to visit this underrated food truck.

86 Bistro and Market: 86 is in the heart of Deep River, a prime destination on the banks of the Ottawa River. Whether you’re stopping by for a morning pick-me-up with their exceptional coffee and delicious breakfast options, enjoying a satisfying lunch featuring fresh sandwiches and homemade soups, or exploring their market stocked with local goodies and premium meats, they have something for everyone.

The Bears Den Lounge & Motel: This motel offers clean and recently renovated accommodations near downtown Deep River. To top it off, they also offer a family-friendly restaurant with a large menu that caters to all tastes.
