A Message From the Owners – Dirk & Claudia Van Wijk
We are thrilled to announce the formation of our newly developed executive team, consisting of our daughter Katrina, alongside Natalie, and Kirstin (KT). They will be taking the helm of day-to-day business operations during the season and spearheading planning, development, and sales activities in the off-season.
This dynamic team brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of experience to propel OWL Rafting forward. While we will still be involved at a high level, we are excited to take some time away to pursue other adventures, confident in the capable hands of this executive team.
Reflecting on our journey with OWL Rafting, one of the accomplishments we are most proud of is introducing thousands of people to the river world. This section of the Ottawa River is unique in the world with its warm, clean, and big whitewater, only accessible from the water. The nature of our business is multifaceted from sharing the river experience through three levels of rafting intensities to building knowledge and importance of sustainable recreation. It’s the camaraderie and lifelong friendships that are forged among our guests and staff that makes us most proud. OWL Rafting has created a positive impact in the outdoor industry. We take pride in the thousands of happy and satisfied guests we welcome each season and the warm reception we receive from the friendly community we operate in. Additionally, we are proud to provide free river access to the paddling public at two locations, fostering a love for the river and promoting water sports.
Looking ahead, our goals for the future of OWL Rafting revolve around continuity and excellence. We aspire for the company to continue its legacy of providing high-quality Canadian river experiences with exceptional customer service. It’s a surprise to us that 50 years have flowed by since Claudia and her father first paddled these rapids discovering a whitewater gem that is now yours to discover.
Now, without further ado, we will introduce you to our all-female executive team.
Chief Advising Officer – Katrina Van Wijk
My history with OWL Rafting runs deep as I was born into the third generation of the founding family. My journey began humbly, mowing grass for a mere dollar an hour. I was bitten by the whitewater bug early on and at 18 seized the opportunity to become a raft guide which had me embark on this thrilling adventure down the Ottawa Rivers rapids.
I have worked in various capacities at both OWL Rafting and our sister company Madawaska Kanu Centre. This work background led me to my current role in graphic design and marketing. Additionally, I spent a decade as a professional whitewater athlete, traversing the globe and competing at the highest level. My passions and hobbies revolve around being outdoors, particularly whitewater kayaking and backcountry skiing. I also find a lot of joy in gardening and nurturing plant life.
In my new role as the Chief Advising Officer on the executive team, I am entrusted with overseeing and managing the marketing and retail departments, ensuring their effective and strategic operations. I am really looking forward to working alongside such a capable all-female team!
Chief Financial Officer – Natalie Grant
My journey with OWL Rafting began back in 2008 when I started working in the kitchen. As the years went by, I gradually moved throughout the departments, taking on kitchen management in 2009 and transitioning to an office role in 2012. From 2012 to 2016, I served as the Office Manager, ensuring smooth operations behind the scenes. Then, in 2017, I even had the opportunity to contribute to the company’s online presence by building its website. I returned in 2022, the lure of the river and its community has me excited to take on this vital role within the Executive Team.
Outside of work, my passions and hobbies revolve around spending time with my beloved dog and going for walks and hikes to appreciate the wonders of nature. I hold a deep value for preserving nature and ensuring access to it, especially after witnessing the limited public land availability in northern Ontario.
As part of my new role, I am responsible for administrative and financial leadership, driving the organization forward. Looking to the future, my goals for OWL Rafting include guiding the company through the transition of new ownership, sustaining its strong brand, and continuing to provide exhilarating rafting experiences for people.
General Manager – Kirstin Thompson
My time with OWL Rafting spans over two decades, beginning in 2006 when I embarked on my first year as a rafting guide. It was a memorable experience that ignited my passion for adventure on the water. In 2008, I took on the role of River Manager, overseeing the operations and ensuring the safety of our guests and staff. For nearly a decade, I dedicated myself to this position, honing my leadership and management skills. Then, in 2021, I took on the role of General Manager, which was the perfect steppingstone for where I am today.
Now, in 2023, I have taken on an even greater responsibility as an Executive Team Member. The journey that led me here includes 23 years of professional river guiding on four continents, with 17 of those years spent at OWL Rafting. Throughout my career, I have amassed 13 years of management experience, equipping me with the skills needed for my current role. My responsibilities encompass ensuring the smooth day-to-day operations of OWL Rafting and providing leadership to the management team. I will continue to be on the river as a guide, which allows me to connect with guests, staff and the water – my happy place.
Beyond work, my passions and hobbies revolve around outdoor activities, including whitewater rafting, skiing, and mountain biking. I find so much joy in adventuring with my young family, and watching our boys develop a love for nature and a sense of curiosity.
Looking towards the future, my goals for OWL Rafting are to lead the company and support the management team and staff in achieving successful seasons. I aim to maintain OWL’s reputation in the adventure tourism industry as a sustainable, inclusive, and thriving business that provides unforgettable experiences for our guests.
Thank you for reading and for being a part of our journey. We can’t wait to host you this summer and facilitate your whitewater experience. Get ready for some high-quality Canadian whitewater adventures and see you all soon.
Cheers!
