Why the Ottawa River is Perfect for Whitewater Rafting, Kayaking & Canoeing

The Ottawa River is Canada’s 8th largest river, comprising of diverse ecosystems, lush forests, and beautiful rock formations. It currently provides a habitat to approximately “85 fish species, 300 bird species, approximately 53 mammal species and 33 amphibian and reptile species.” (Canadian Wildlife Federation Blog) The Ottawa flows about 1271 km long beginning in Quebec, heads west to Lake Temiskaming, then shifts south & southwest to the St. Lawrence River. Just upstream of our Nations Capital, the last remaining ‘wild’ stretch of natural whitewater can be found.  This section has become world renowned for its “fast, clean, warm and friendly waters – perfect for serious kayak, canoe or rafting action.” (Ottawa Valley Tourist Association)

Did You Know?

Did you know that the Ottawa River was the original territory of the Algonquin people? In Anishinaabe (Algonqiuon language) the Ottawa River is called “Kichi Sibi” which directly translates to The Great River. It was a natural “highway” for indigenous people and a central route for interested fur traders and European explorers. This beautiful river was utilized on many occasions making it the main transport route, before it was associated with whitewater recreation.

Why is The Ottawa River so Great?

The Ottawa River is a BIG volume river which means there’s always plenty of water. In summer when the river level drops, the rapids become more defined providing river enthusiasts more playful rapids. This is due to being closer to the riverbed, where the water gets to flow over the many uneven features creating a greater variety.

With the baking sun the rapids of the Rocher Fendu warm up quickly, with temperatures in the mid-20’s by June. The two channels of the Ottawa River offer a wide range of rapids, from low, medium to high intensity making for a family-friendly or wild adventure. The vastness of the river requires navigation but that’s why river guides are essential. – to allow our guests to focus on the fun.

The natural outdoor ambiance of the area adds to the wonder of the Ottawa River and overall whitewater experience. The rustic trails, warm water, and wildlife set the scene as the rich greenery and natural light create a rejuvenating experience.

OWL Rafting is situated 5 kms downstream of the last rapid and brings a unique experience to our guests – the combination of a full-day river descent and pontoon meal cruise. Each raft trip is met by our floating kitchen, where you’ll transition raft to pontoon boat to enjoy a freshly grilled meal as you return to our lakeside resort.  OWL Rafting has been awarded the coveted Canadian Signature Experience designation.
